About the Kenan Fellow

Carol Swink, a 2004 Kenan Fellow, worked with NC-ISE (North Carolina Infrastructure for Science Education) on her project entitled Science Inquiry and Assessment. Her mentor was Brenda Evans, is coordinator for NC-ISE. Through the fellowship, Carol worked on the development of support documents for the K-5 curriculum. These support documents provide assessments and background information for teachers to utilize in their classrooms. Also, Carol served as a presenter at the local, state, and national levels on inquiry-based learning and the implementation of science notebooks. Carol has helped train teachers in how to use science kits in the classroom as well as how to effectively integrate writing into the science curriculum. Carol has also developed Power Point presentations and informational inquiry packets to be used as teacher resources. Also, she continues to work with staff development opportunities to enhance teacher understanding of inquiry science.

Educational Background

Carol received her undergraduate degree from Meredith College and her graduate degree (in Curriculum and Instruction: Development and Supervision) from North Carolina State University. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher. Carol is a fifth grade math and science teacher at Hunter Elementary Gifted and Talented Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina.
