News from the Director: State Funding

The North Carolina State Legislature is in session and considering appropriations for the new budget. The Kenan Fellows Program was fortunate to receive funding this past year from the NC State University STEM Initiative, which was part of an appropriation by the General Assembly. This year, the Kenan Fellows Program is in line for a new appropriation from this cycle of funding. As was the case last year, these funds would come through the NC State University STEM Initiative.

A week or so ago many of you received an email from us asking you to take a moment and draft a letter to members of the North Carolina General Assembly on behalf of the Kenan Fellows Program. I want to personally thank those of you who took the time to use the template we provided and sent your email off to the list of legislators you were given. Sending a message to our elected officials is important not only to assure that we continue to receive funding, but also to let them know how the funds are being used to better the teaching profession through the Kenan Fellows Program. For those of you who have not had a chance yet, I would like to encourage you to take a few minutes to review the email template and list of legislators and please send an individual email to the Chair of each committee and to any members who are from your district. The House finalized their budget this past week. The Senate is still working on their version and then it goes to committee.

Thank you for your assistance in the effort to secure further State funding for the Kenan Fellows Program. It really will make a difference. If you have questions or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (919) 515-5118.
